Jewish Hospital Medical Center East has brought together technology and art to create a dynamic and progressive healing environment that will set new standards for health care. This new state of the art facility has expanded the objectives of health care to include a concern for the emotional comfort of their patients as well as their physical well being. The hospital conducted an extensive review of major medical teaching institutions’ outpatient facilities and consulted with researchers and leading high-tech companies to provide the most sophisticated building design and technology.

In addition to state of the art facilities, Jewish Hospital Medical Center East has incorporated the healing properties of art in the design of the new facility. The hospital has assembled a collection of glass art distributed throughout the complex. The collection includes the work of eight glass artists from Kentucky: Kenneth F. vonRoenn, Jr., Stephen Rolfe Powell, Fred DiFrenzi, Brook White, Greg Fleischaker, Mark Payton, Patrick Martin, and Brian Higer.

The crown jewel of the collection is a 30’ tall suspended glass sculpture designed by Kenneth F. vonRoenn, Jr., and fabricated by Architectural Glass Art, Inc . vonRoenn designed the work to be seen at a great distance from the busy roadways passing by the hospital. As such, it serves as the most prominent feature of the building and has become a visual landmark of the area. VonRoenn describes is work “as a visual expression of growth, change and transformation. The spiraling elements of curved dichroic glass establish a vertical movement that creates a form suggestive of a flower. The dichroic glass was used because of its characteristic of changing color as it is seen from varying positions, which creates a dynamic quality. With the floral form, spiraling movement, and transforming colors, the concept of growth is created as a symbolic representation of the mission and role of the health care facility not just in treating ailments, but in sustaining the vitality of life.”
